What is a growth mindset

A growth mindset is a long-term approach that an individual adopts toward their own development, the world around them, and the opportunities that arise. A person with a growth mindset views the ever-changing world around them as an opportunity, remains curious about new possibilities, and does not fear obstacles. Most importantly, they are willing to work on themselves. They understand that long-term success requires continuous learning, staying informed about new trends, and being open to feedback as well as to the world in general.

How to develop a growth mindset

Here are some tips on how to achieve it:

  • Read. First and foremost, reading is highly recommended. You can read anything you want.  Reading enhances creativity, abstract thinking, and the ability to concentrate. Whether you enjoy detective stories, short stories, poetry, self-development books, or professional articles, regular reading cultivates your ability to absorb information and discover new things.
  • Learn to listen better. Many valuable insights, thought-provoking ideas, and constructive feedback come from the people around us. However, few people truly listen. Try to be more attentive to what those around you are saying, and take an interest in the knowledge they possess that you do not.
  • Learn a new skill every month. Set a goal to learn something new each month. This can include both professional and personal challenges. You could learn to solve a Rubik’s cube, bake bread, cook a new recipe, jump rope, or master a new communication tool at work. The key is to maintain a long-term commitment to continuous learning.
  • Do not approach self-development purely opportunistically. Do not see education solely as a way to earn more money or increase your value on the job market. Do not choose learning activities based only on whether you can then use them at work. Instead, learn to take joy in acquiring new knowledge simply because you have gained a skill you previously lacked. This approach fosters a positive attitude toward change and learning in general.
